Architectural shingle is the roof most families in Palm Beach County can afford, and it's a good roof when it's put on right. You'll see a lot of it in Greenacres, Lake Worth and Royal Palm Beach, on the ranch homes and the newer subdivisions alike. Here's what matters. The shingles you see from the street are the last layer. Under them is the part that keeps the water out: the nailing of the wood deck, the underlayment, the drip edge, the flashing at every wall and pipe. Architectural shingle and three-tab
Three-tab is the flat shingle you see on older roofs. Architectural shingle is thicker, layered, and rated for far higher wind. It's the only shingle we put on a house here. That wind rating only holds when every shingle is nailed to the maker's pattern, which is why the county inspects the nailing before the roof is finished.
The system under the shingles
Tear off to the wood. Re-nail the deck to code. Self-adhered underlayment over the whole roof, not just the edges. Drip edge, starter course, flashing at every wall, chimney, skylight and pipe. A ridge vent so the attic can breathe. Then the shingles. Each of those is its own line on your written price, so you can hold our quote next to anyone else's.
How long a shingle roof lasts here
Shorter than tile or metal. Our sun and heat age shingle faster than the northern weather the warranty brochure has in mind, and a roof over a hot, poorly vented attic ages faster still. A well-installed architectural shingle roof gives you a good couple of decades. We look at the attic and the vents during the inspection and tell you what we see.
Where shingle roofs make sense
Shingle is the practical roof for a lot of the county. If your street was built with shingle, or your budget says shingle, there's no shame in it. Done right, it passes the same wind code as tile. Where it doesn't make sense is a house built for tile in a neighborhood that requires it. Check with your HOA before you switch, and we'll price both so you can see the gap.

Shingle vs tile for a Florida home?
Shingle costs less up front and lasts a good couple of decades. Tile costs more, weighs more, lasts a lot longer, and is what most neighborhoods here were built with. Both pass the wind code when installed right. If the house was built for tile, check what your community allows before switching. We price both.
Are shingle roofs okay in hurricanes?
Yes, when the roof is built as a system. Architectural shingle nailed to the maker's high-wind pattern, over a re-nailed deck and self-adhered underlayment, passes the Florida Building Code for our county and gets inspected along the way. The nailing and the underlayment are what hold, so that's where we never cut corners.
Can new shingles go over my old roof?
We don't do it. A second layer hides rotten wood, adds weight, voids most shingle warranties, and doesn't meet the underlayment rule in the Florida Building Code for our wind zone. We tear off, check the wood and start clean.
How long does a shingle roof replacement take?
Most homes take a few days once we start, plus the county inspections between stages. Weather can move it. You'll have the schedule in writing before we begin, and we keep you posted while it's going on.
