    The short answer

For most Palm Beach County homes, lighter Owens Corning shades such as Shasta White, Sand Dune, Desert Tan and Driftwood are the easiest fit: they reflect more of the afternoon sun and sit well against the light stucco that is common here. Estate Gray and Quarry Gray are the popular middle ground. Onyx Black and Teak look sharp on modern and darker-trim homes, but they absorb more heat. Before you fall for any color, check your HOA's approved list and look at a real sample outside, in daylight.

Molsbee Roofing is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor and has roofed Palm Beach County homes since 1975, from our shop in Lake Worth Beach. Here is how we help homeowners narrow the choice.

How the Florida sun changes the choice

Color is not only about looks in Palm Beach County. A roof here sits under strong sun most of the year, and a darker shingle absorbs more of that heat than a lighter one. On a home with a hot attic or an older air handler up there, a lighter shade is the practical pick.

Sun also changes how a color reads. A gray that looks blue-gray in a showroom can look nearly white at noon on a Wellington street, and a brown can turn flat under midday light. That is why we never pick from a phone screen or a printed brochure.

Colors that suit common Palm Beach County home styles

Mediterranean and Spanish-style stucco homes. Warm, light shades such as Desert Tan and Sand Dune pick up the cream and terracotta tones in the walls. Many of these homes carry tile today; if you are moving to shingle, a warm shade keeps the look close.

Ranch and mid-century homes. Driftwood and Estate Gray suit the long, low roof lines common in Lake Worth Beach and West Palm Beach neighborhoods without making the roof the loudest thing on the street.

Coastal and Key West-style homes. Shasta White and Quarry Gray pair with white trim and pastel siding, and the lighter tone helps with heat on homes close to the water.

Modern homes with dark trim. Onyx Black gives a crisp outline on white or gray stucco. Plan for the extra heat, and talk to us about attic ventilation before you commit.

Popular Owens Corning shades we show Palm Beach County homeowners

    Color Tone Where it works
Shasta White Bright white blend Coastal homes, heat-conscious owners
Sand Dune Light warm beige Stucco and Mediterranean styles
Desert Tan Warm tan Cream and terracotta walls
Driftwood Soft brown-gray blend Ranch homes, mixed neighborhoods
Estate Gray Mid gray Most exteriors, a safe middle ground
Quarry Gray Light-mid gray White trim, coastal palettes
Teak Rich brown Wood accents, darker trim
Onyx Black Deep black Modern homes with high contrast

Color availability can change by region and supplier, so we confirm each color with our supplier and bring physical samples to your home before you decide.

Check your HOA list and historic rules first

Many Palm Beach County communities keep an approved roof color list, and some limit shingle roofs to certain shades or require a submittal before work starts. Ask your HOA for the current list and the approval steps early; it is the most common reason a color decision has to be made twice.

If your home sits in a historic district, the city may review exterior changes, including roof color, before a permit is issued. We handle the permit for your roof and will tell you if a review step applies to your address.

    Algae streaks and salt air

The dark streaks you see on many shingle roofs around the county are usually algae, which thrives in our heat and humidity. They show most on light colors. Ask for an algae-resistant shingle line, and expect streaks to be less visible on mid-tone blends such as Driftwood or Estate Gray than on solid white.

Near the Intracoastal and the ocean, salt air is harder on the metal parts of a roof than on the shingles themselves. Edge metal, flashing and fasteners need to be specified for the coast, whatever color you choose.

    How to pick with confidence

    1. Get your HOA's approved list, if you have one.
    2. Look at two or three finished roofs nearby in the colors you like.
    3. Hold physical samples against your stucco, trim and front door in morning and afternoon light.
    4. Think about heat: lighter for hot attics, darker only with good ventilation.
    5. Pick the shade, then let us match the ridge cap and edge metal so the roof reads as one piece.

    Color is the easy part

The shingle color is what people see. What keeps the water out is the deck repair, the underlayment, the flashing and the nailing pattern under it, all built to the Florida Building Code.
