Installed badly it is the one that peels along a ridge in the first serious blow. The difference is not the shingle you can see from the street.
It is everything under it: a deck walked sheet by sheet and re-nailed to current code, self-adhered membrane across the whole roof rather than only the edges and valleys, drip edge, a starter course, formed flashing at every wall, chimney, skylight and pipe, a ridge vent so the attic can breathe, and then architectural shingle fastened to the manufacturer's high-wind pattern for your address. Hidden Valley and Pheasant Walk were largely built with shingle and suit it still.
Boca Teeca mixes it with low-slope sections that need their own system where the two meet. Bocaire Golf Club, Bel Marra and Trieste at Boca were designed around tile, and several of their architectural committees will not approve shingle at all, which is something you should learn before you choose it rather than after.
We say so at the inspection. The other thing worth knowing before you choose is that a shingle roof fails from its edges and its penetrations, not its middle, so the starter course, the drip edge and the flashing around every pipe and skylight are where the money should go.

What to know.
- Architectural shingle, and what we will not install
Architectural shingle is the thick, layered kind that reads as depth from the ground and carries a real wind rating. Three-tab is the thin, flat shingle on older roofs and we do not install it here. The rating printed on a bundle only counts if every shingle is nailed to the high-wind pattern, with the nails in the correct line and none driven through the mat. That nailing is what holds the roof together in a storm, and the county inspects it before the job closes.
- When shingle is the right roof, and when it is not
Shingle is right when the house was built for it, when the budget matters, and when nothing above you says otherwise. It is the wrong answer when your community's approved list specifies tile, when the elevation was designed around a barrel profile, or when a canal address argues for a metal package instead. We tell you which of those you are in before you choose, because a shingle roof that has to come off again to satisfy a committee is the most expensive roof on this page.
- The layers you are paying for
Tear-off to the wood. Soft plywood replaced and photographed. Deck re-nailed. Self-adhered membrane over the entire roof, so the house stays dry even if wind takes shingles off. Drip edge, starter course, new flashing at every penetration, ridge vent, then the shingles themselves. Six or seven separate lines on a written price, which is exactly what lets you compare our quote to another one honestly rather than guessing why two totals differ.
- Where shingle meets a low-slope section
A lot of houses in Boca Teeca run pitched shingle into a flat or low-slope garage or lanai section. That join is where those roofs leak, and shingle does not belong on the low-slope part at any price. We finish the flat section in its own system, form the flashing where the two meet rather than sealing it, and price that section on its own line. A quote that treats the whole roof as one surface has not looked at your house.

How long does a shingle roof last in Boca Raton?
Less than tile and less than metal, and the honest range depends far more on the installation than the brand. Sun and heat age the mat, and wind finds any shingle that was nailed high, nailed through or nailed short. A shingle roof laid over a re-nailed deck with full self-adhered membrane and a correct high-wind nailing pattern lasts a long time and fails gracefully when it finally goes. One laid over an old roof with edge-only underlayment does not, and no warranty rewrites that.
Is shingle allowed in my North Boca Raton community?
Sometimes, and the approved list decides rather than us. Hidden Valley and Pheasant Walk are largely shingle communities. Bocaire Golf Club, Bel Marra and Trieste at Boca were designed around tile and their architectural committees may specify it. We check your community's list at the inspection, before you pick anything, and where a submittal is required we prepare it and wait for approval before the permit is pulled through the City of Boca Raton or the county building division.
Can I put shingle over my existing roof to save money?
We do not do it. Laying new shingle over an old roof hides the deck, so soft plywood, a tired membrane and rot around a pipe all stay hidden and keep spreading, and the new shingles sit on a surface nobody has inspected. It also adds weight and traps heat. Every shingle roof we install is a tear-off. It costs more on the day, it is the only version we will guarantee for as long as you own the house, and it is the version the county inspects.
What is the difference between shingle and tile here?
Price, weight, life and looks. Shingle is the lowest-priced full roof, lighter on the structure, and the quickest to install. Tile costs more, lasts longer, and is what most of the later North Boca Raton communities were designed around. Both depend entirely on the membrane underneath, which is the layer that actually keeps water out and the layer that wears out first. Whichever you choose, ask what membrane is going down and over how much of the roof, and get the answer in writing.
